Weekend of Hope - Service Events - Sign Up Today!Serving our communities in honor of Earth Day - Saturday, April 27, 2024 Earth Day is all about making our local community a better place to live. This year HOPE worldwide is honoring our planet by hosting a community clean up on the East Bay and the West Bay. Join us in Hayward or in San Jose to work with our partner HOPE worldwide and thier partner Downtown Streets Teams to do our part to make the Bay Area a better place to be. (Downtown Streets Team has a unique approach to ending homelessness. Through our volunteer Work Experience Program, unhoused and at-risk Team Members improve the community through beautification projects. In return for their contributions, Team Members receive a basic needs stipend, case management, and employment services that support them in their growth toward self-sufficiency.) A free lunch will be provided at the conclusion of both of the events! In the East Bay: We will be gathering in Hayward at Downtown Street Office to break up into teams, get our assignment, and clean up our local streets. Dress comfortably with the weather forecast in mind - gloves recommended. We will provide trash pickers and garbage bags. In the West Bay: We will be gathering along the Guadalupe River near Coleman Avenue and Autumn Street to break up into teams, get our assignment, and clean up our local streets. Dress comfortably with the weather forecast in mind - gloves recommended. We will provide trash pickers and garbage bags. For Young Adults Around The Bay: A panel of local individuals who have served on a HOPE Volunteer Corp (HVC) will gather at the South San Francisco Conference Center and talk about serving the poor, followed by an engaging and interactive message from Matt Rollins on My Brother's Keeper - Jesus's radical call to show up for the unheard, the hurting, and the down-and-out in our communities. Following this event, there will be an optional "on your own" dinner in San Francisco. Details will be shared at the event. Earth Day is April 22Planet vs. Plastics Global Theme for Earth Day 2024 Genesis 1: 28-31 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the Earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole Earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the Earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so. Every year in April, during National Earth Month, there is a day dedicated to the Earth. But every day, God has entrusted the Earth to US! So this is a good time of year to stop and reflect on what you are doing to take care of the planet and a great time to stop and think of our environment spiritually and take responsibility for where it is. Our Earth shows signs that it is dying, animals are going extinct, habitats are being destroyed, pollution is taking over, oceans are dying, and our vegetation has diseases and pesticides which directly impact our health. This is from the website EarthDay.org. For the complete article please click on the link below: "This year's theme is "Plastics vs. Planet." Plastics extend beyond an imminent environmental issue; they present a grave threat to human health as alarming as climate change. As plastics break down into microplastics, they release toxic chemicals into our food and water sources and circulate through the air we breathe. Plastic production now has grown to more than 380 million tons per year. More plastic has been produced in the last ten years than in the entire 20th century, and the industry plans to grow explosively for the indefinite future. More than 500 billion plastic bags—one million bags per minute—were produced worldwide last year. Many plastic bags have a working life of a few minutes, followed by an afterlife of centuries. Even after plastics disintegrate, they remain as microplastics, minute particles permeating every niche of life on the planet. 100 billion plastic beverage containers were sold last year in the United States. That’s more than 300 bottles per inhabitant. A few of them will be converted into park benches; none of them will be made into new plastic bottles and 95% of all plastics in the US won’t be recycled at all. Even the 5% of plastics being recycled are “downcycling” to inferior products or shipped to poorer countries for “recycling”, leaving the demand for virgin plastic undiminished. People seldom think of water when they think of plastics. But making a plastic water bottle requires six times as much water as the bottle itself contains." On earthday.org they have an action toolkit, a social media toolkit, a plastic detox challenge and more to help us get started! Happy Earth Day! For more infomation visit:
